From the Desk of: Robin Wakeham, Physical Therapist
Dear Friend,
Is bed rest bad for lower back pain?
While it may seem counterintuitive, bed rest is generally not recommended for treating lower back pain.Prolonged periods of bed rest can actually make back pain worse by weakening the muscles that support the spine, leading to more pain and stiffness.
Instead, it is recommended to stay as active as possible while managing the pain with over-the-counter pain relievers, ice or heat therapy, and stretching exercises. Walking, swimming, and other low-impact activities can be helpful in improving back pain and reducing the risk of future episodes.
If the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
Thanks,
Robin Wakeham
